Best Opening Lyrics: No. 9

"Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine"
--Patti Smith's 'Gloria'

The rock poet explained her famed line to us last year: "I didn't want anyone having to die for my sins."

Untrue statement whether intended for a work of art or not. Jesus did die for her sins and all of mankind. But another reason the line doesnt deserve to be here (like several I've already seen on this so called "best list" is the fact that there are plenty of songs which sold millions which have keen opening lines we all remember which also sold millions, and they sold millions BECAUSE of the writing.

Sid;
You said and I quote:
"Untrue statement whether intended for a work of art or not. Jesus did die for her sins and all of mankind."

Which I think is an untrue statement.
It's all a matter of opinion..but use "I" statements..don't speack for anybody but yourself.

Not an untrue statement what-so-ever. Untrue to you perhaps because of your beliefs.....not untrue to others.

Just another reason why bible beating, jesus freaks should stick to what they know; and music doesn't fall in what they know. Leave the works of art and music to us non believers; we tend to be less judgemental. Just go about the rest of your days judging others and condeming all who don't follow you like sheep to your so called hell.

Children: READ the interview (link "explained")
When I wrote the peom "Gloria" (in 1970) it was not really anti Christ -who I really admire.
She's older, smarter and has been around the blocks a few more times now. (maybe back-tracking a little too)

While I agree the song doesn't belong on the list, that is an incredibly stupid and immature thing to say. You need to grow up and educate yourself.

Well, I guess they asked for it..... becasue it would of more christianlike to embrace the lost ones with lovve and comprehension rather than ridicule...but not all those who CLAIM to be Christioans are really devout..... as an atheist myself, I know that I would enter heaven way befroe many so called christiasn......

on another note, did anyone see the comment from another stray one, calling Sinead O Connor america hater??? Can anyone explain that to me? why is she an american hater? Was teh pope american?

I agree with number one (at least the beginning part), and to Jason, if the guy actually "grows up" and "educates himself", he will hold his beliefs even more. A person who seeks God will find Him. Some of the biggest heavyweights of Christianity began as atheists trying to disprove Christ. But about the music...lol...nothing much except 50 Cent certainly doesn't belong on this list...

hey page - unbelievable. i know you are not insinuating that Christians can have no other interesests or capacity to appreciate music, arts, or culture of any kind; because that seems like it would be a pathetically narrow-minded and judgemental thing to say. hmmm, ironic. Yet, so sad that you can be so wrong. not to mention disrespectful and completely insensitive to the diversity of ALL humankind.

Will you all please be quiet about Jesus. Don't comment at all as a matter of fact. This song is a classic in my book, and plenty of otehrs too. I swear only you people can turn a top 25 lyric list into a crazy religious battle. Shut up and appreciate the music or just ignore it.

I just gotta say that Jesus did die in propitiation for EVERYONES sins and whether you believe or don't believe.. doesn't make it any less true.. he still died for us all whether we accept His gift or not.....

Hello? The idea of this forum is to comment on the opening lyrics of "Jesus died for somebody sins but not mine"

Whether this young lady or anyone who holds her belief that Jesus did not die for her sins. That's not so. The reason for Jesus coming was to save us (all of us)from our sins. If she refuses to accept the sacrifice He made, it still does not change the fact that he did. Through Propitiation, all who believe sins are transferred to Jesus work on the Cross and we are saved. We are Justified; not because of our righteousness but the Imputed righteousness of Christ.

It's only rock & roll...it's supposed to piss off people. I loved the line when it came out and I was a teenager and I think it's still a great line. I don't need to believe it to like it. A good piece of poetry.

What better way to sound tough than to say her sins are so bad even Christ's death couldn't have atoned for them? Really words from someone in the depths of despair thinking that something of the magnitude of Christ's death couldn't forgive them...

You've gotta love narrow minded people who think their beliefs are for everyone. Jesus died and he didn't die for, don't argue this fact please.
Hey look, I can be narrow minded too, that makes a christian, right?
