20 Bitter Band Breakups: Pink Floyd
- Posted by Spinner

Original bandleader Syd Barrett was an early casualty in 1968, addled by drug-fueled mental illness. Roger Waters (left) departs in 1985, just after releasing 'The Final Cut' -- practically a Waters solo album with the other Floyd members as sidemen. Waters declared the band "a spent force" and then sued David Gilmour and Nick Mason for carrying on with the Pink Floyd name.

Waters created the tunes and Gilmore added the Pink Floyd sound to those songs. They both needed the other more than they would admit.

From Syds original vision and starting the band, from David Gilmour taking over and playing lead, and roger writting most of the songs, not to forget richards keyboards and nicks drums, they all played thier part to make the greatest band of all time. Roger can write, Gilmour can play, and they need each others talent to truely make the great music they did as a group. Though I would have to say Gilmour is my personal favorite, all the members contributed and they all needed each other to be as successful as they were.
DEBRAH- You sound like an idiot, I saw Roger Waters in concert, he did dark side of the moon all the way through, and he blew the doors off the place! He Rocked it, on key, all the way through! Since Floyd stopped touring as a group in the mid 80s, seing Roger Waters is the best you can get to seeing anything close to the legend of Pink Floyd.
As with any big time band that is with eachother for over 20 plus years, sometimes enough is enough, and Rogers artistic mind was taking the band in a direction that other members didnt agree with as much, like when Roger wanted songs that didnt make it onto THE WALL put onto their next alblum, The final cut. Gilmour asked Waters, if the songs wernt good enough for our last ablum (the wall), why are they good enough for this one (the final cut). Gilmour was so upset with this, he had his name removed from the credits on the final cut.
Gilmore, Waters, Wright, Mason, and Barrett, Thanks for everything...
Pink Floyd was so HUGE in my senior year of high school (1973-1974) when "Dark Side of The Moon" came out!!! At every party that year, that album was playing as the bongs made the rounds!!! awesome!!!!

wasn't an original member, but I think his influence
and immense talent catapulted the band to Iconic
status. I just saw Roger Waters, and he whined on
and on about Bush and the U.S.A. I get why Gilmour
isn't crazy about a reunion. I'd still love to see
it.
I didn't begin to like the band until Last year. I do however, know about the Fact That Roger Waters did Sue David and Nick for using the Pink Floyd name. Which in my opinion, was very unprofessional. But now all these years later Roger Wants a Pink Floyd reunion. I don't blame David Gilmour one bit for not wanting to reunite with that skumbag Waters.

To Larry: Um...what Roger did to Pink Floyd? Apparently you don't know what YOU are speaking of. Without that'whiner' around, there would have been NO MUSIC. Who do you think wrote 99 % of the songs? Pfft...
Pink Floyd was a great band. I wish Roger Waters and David Gilmore with the remaining members could find a way to play together again. Why is it that their EGO's can not settle down to friendship and better themselves? They had a gift.

ROGER WATERS IS NOTHING WITHOUT DAVID GILMORE AND THE REST OF PINK FLOYD. DAVID GILMORE BRINGS CLASS AND MUSICIANSHIP TO PINK FLOYD. SYD BARRETT WAS WHAT HE WAS A SICK, DEMENTED DRUG ADDICTED WHO ASKED FOR THE DEATH HE DESERVED BUT CAME TOO LATE ! (SEE EMILY RUN? C'MON!!!!)
YOU GO TO A ROGER WATERS SHOW EXPECTING PINK FLOYD? YOU GOT RIPPED OFF
Who cares if Syd Barret had issues he still made exceptional music and without Syd Pink Floyd wouldn't have been who they were. Also that album in which "See Emily Run" came off of was one of the greatest albums of all time and that rocketed Pink Floyd into becoming a phenomenon(Piper At The Gates of Dawn) buy the album and listen to it before you put down Syd Barret
Roger Waters is a true scumbag for what he did to that band. I am glad he left and Pink Floyd has never sound better. Gilmour, Mason and Wright still rock and don't need a whiner like waters around them anyway!
