20 Bitter Band Breakups: The Supremes
- Posted by Spinner

Berry Gordy's fixation on Diana Ross (left), who went solo in 1970, sent founding member Florence Ballard into a deep depression. Ballard died penniless in 1976, a year before the post-Diana incarnation of the band broke up. During a taping for the band's reunion on the 'Motown 25' TV special in 1983, Ross shoved original Supremes member Mary Wilson.

It is really sad that so many people clearly have a misconcrude idea of what really happened and the fact that Mary Wilson had an agenda, when all were told to wear black and white, and she showed up in red in an obvious attemp to upstage Diana. Even that was not enough. She went on to try to take matters in her own hands and introduce Berry. What on earthe would make her think that would go without incedent? Nothing! BECAUSE. . . She knew EXACTLY what she was doing. And then wrote about it in a book. And Diana is the ham? Think about it folks. Mary knew all the people involved, and how they would react to her manipulative actions. That was the bitch that night at work!

I don't know any of these talented Ladies. But I do know that when Diana Ross left and Tammi Terrel joined the supremes, I believe her to be Tammi and not Jean? They were on top and did have a few songs that did very well. I don't know what happened after that. I have seen Mary Wilson performing several times and have enjoyed here shows very much-Go mary, even had the pleasure of meeting this beautiful lady! What I enjoyed is there music and all the hard work theses ladies must have given to make it this big! Thank you for your music and memories! Bless you all!!

I dont remember too many other solo artists who broke away from their bands that truly out succeeded their original band.....
Yes, She is more known the the Supremes but that is rare.. .. Think bout how many other narcisstic singers thought they were bigger than their band :)
hm... First prime example.. is.. well look how Van Halen and David Lee Roth have Floundered ever since...
There are many other similar stories since..
I must set the record straight regarding that Supreme incident. Why? Because I was there at the Shriner's on the 7th row center when they were taping Motown's 25th Anniversary. Susanne De Passe always refers to the problem with Gordy's introduction when Mary Wilson cried out: "Come on down Berry!" and Diana Ross pushed the microphone away from Mary's mouth. That incident was no big deal and it could have been avoided if they had previously informed Mary of the oficial plan. The REAL problem was before when Mary and Cindy joined Diana on stage singing "Someday We'll Be Together."
From my seat I noticed that the concept for this so-called "reunion of The Supremes" was based on the idea that only Diana was important. From the time she came down the aisle singing you could sense the whole thing was designed to showcase Miss Ross. After finishing her big solo number, in a very weak voice by the way, she called out for Cindy and Mary who came from opposite sides of the stage and joined her on the center. Diana stood there in the same level as The Supremes for a couple of seconds and immediatelly moved forward. Mary and Cindy looked confused and moved forward to be again on the same level but this is when we all witnessed the Ross temperament at work. It was not so much how she moved a little sideways stepping on Mary's territory forcing her to stay behind while she stepped forward one more time. It was the look in Miss Ross face that shook us up. Her eyes were flashing at Mary and there was no mistaking the unspoken message: "Bitch, stay behind me or else!" This was the moment when the audience gasped. It all lasted seconds. Next thing Smokey Robinson walked in diverting the attention from the ladies and asking all the Motown artists to join him on stage. This is what really happened and Miss De Passe knows it. If it was all so innocent why did they edited those parts from the show and from the video? By now they probably destroyed the evidence. Thank God I have a good memory! That Ross look is hard to forget. I would never get in her way.
Firstly,,the FACTS about the alledged 'shove' on the Reuninon show were reported by Suzanne De Pass who reported that it was originally planned for Berry Gordy to be introduced a differnet way and Ross was telling wilson that and the gesture got misconstued. Ross was/is ambitious and she has been rewarded thusly. Her legacy speaks for itself. esp for the benefits of music, Black women, and 60's music culture. History will judge her accordingly. I LOVE her to death!

Also remember this, for a group to have a 17 year run, (10with Miss Ross) and another7with Miss Wilson is a major accomplishment, especially for a female group, black or white!

I refuse to see Mahogany or any of her other movies or even play her songs anymore because DRoss's selfish, greedy, vanity just doesn't wash in my book.

She and her entourage took more than 30 minutes to disembark an Air France connection from Cairo Egypt. She slept in her bed, while I slept on a concrete slap in one of the game rooms at JFK. I ALWAYS turn the radio to another channel when I hear one of her songs!
August 14 2007 at 12:10 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDiana Ross has and always will be a vain,self-absorbed woman who will do whatever/whoever it takes to make HER and only HER the center of attention and main attraction. Yes, she does have a great voice but there are many other women just as talented who refused to stoop to her level just to get ahead.
August 13 2007 at 10:18 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyi love Miss Ross, I go waqy back s a fan, but her ruthless treatment of her fellow Supremes rightfullt bit her on the ass when she attempted her cash grab reunion, which failed miserably when Mary and Cindy told her to ***k off
