Potent Quotables: Bo Diddley

"The Beatles wasn't rock 'n' roll. I don't know what you'd
call it, but I don't accept the word 'rock 'n' roll' with the
Beatles."

Well, Diddley's quote may be half truth. The Beatles looking at the collective and over the whole discography were never one genre. While John had more of the teenage angst associated with rocknroll, Paul was more calm and cool. The band itself mixed genres like folk music and rocknroll, to produce the first folk-rock sounds. The Beatles owe their start to musicians like Eddie Cochran and Bo Diddley, but they took what they learned from them and molded it into something of their own. Isn't that what every musician does? So, I agree in part with Bo, The Beatles were an enigma; cold labels don't suit their music: they played everything, and even pioneered a few things along the way.
