That's when the ligitimacy for blues came along. Elvis wasn't the only whiteboy cross over, there was Pat Boone, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc... but none except Johnny Cash came close to Elvis' level or flare.

January 08 2009 at 8:18 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWho is the idiot talking about presley being a perv cos he dated cilla when she was 14, oh please the girl didn't move over to memphis to be with him till she was 16, her mum & dad gave her permission to do this, and she never had sex with him till she was of legal age, she always stood by this fact and i'm sure she would have admitted it if it was true seeing all the things that went on between the 2 of them. Get over it loser.

Elvis was before Chuck Berry, Little Richard...etc. You forgot he started at Sun in 1953. Berry signed with Chess records and released the up tempo R&B single (Maybellene) in July of 1955. His other hits included "Roll Over Beethoven" (1956) and "Johnny B. Goode" (1958). Meanwhile Little Richard signed with Specialty Records and released (Tutti Frutti), Nov. of 1955.
On July 19th 1954 Elvis released (Thats Alright). Exactly one year before Chuck Berry's (Maybellene). That same year Elvis also released (Good Rockin' tonight). On Oct. 16th 1954 Mr. Presley was signed to the Louisiana Hayride. In April of the following year he released the single (I'm Left You're right, She's gone). It became a big hit for Elvis, landing at #3 on the chart. A little later in 1955, Elvis scored the #1 Smash, (I Forgot To Remember To Forget. The flip side, (Mystery Train) went to #11 on the R&B Chart. He recorded many more during that time. Remember, This all happened before Chuck Berry and Little Richard had appeared on the music scene and released their first single.
The 1954 recording of(That's Alright) was the first time Blues, Gospel, and Country were ever recorded as one sound. Many experts feel this was the first true Rock 'N' Roll song ever recorded.
ok so there were other African-American musicians the same time as Elvis, however, Elvis is AUTHENTIC,he grew up on the same gospel, blues etc.it was in his blood also! and I am sorry to say those times were rough with segregation, racism, etc.It had to be someone that crossed all barriers and was white in order to make it. Heck it was tough enough on Elvis as he was ridiculed, censored and thought to be singing devil music, can you imagine an African-American in the same spot during those times? They as well as everyone else should be thanking Elvis.Right after Elvis broke ground how many Black groups made it Big? Plenty!! So for those reasons alone Elvis deserves the title "King Of Rock 'n Roll" He went through alot.

August 23 2007 at 12:28 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTalent comes from all walks of life. I saw Bruce Springsteen around town and down the shore, in parades, competitions, etc., when I was growing up in the Darlings and the Lenape Legionettes from Sayerville American Legion Post 211. Bruce looked like he enjoyed looking at a girl that was so patriotic guarding the American flag and named me Gloria after old Glory the American Flag. He looked like he wanted to sell encyclopedias to me to teach me more about American History. In a wink of a young girls eye that's me still winking little old Gloria! Some say those where the Glory Days but, I say they are still here because I'm still praying for World Peace and writing about it. I started writing Bruce Springsteen in 1985 and I still write him to this day. We are both writers that enjoy each others spirit and work that remains an inspiration of traditional accomplishments now and always. Keep up the good work my Beloved Bruce because my living love poems will be found at Poetry.com in the near future. Keep the peace East Street Band. Angel's Dove Peace be with you all always. Let me guess - nothing much except for trying to get attention by calling elvis a fag lol. I suspect in fact, that you likely work at McD's where you've been since you were 16 - ticked off at others who have talent lol.
