I thought the Readers' Best Opening Lyrics were much better than Spinners.com....but, I can't believe that the Eagles...Peaceful Easy Feeling...with "I like the way your sparkling earrings lay against your skin so brown, and I want to sleep with you in the desert tonight with a billion stars all around" did not make either list.

I'm in agreement about the Readers Choice is better than Spinners. There are still a couple of weak ones, but not as many as the Spinners choices. A lot of the comments that follow are not opening lines; rather, they're practically the whole song. If the best opening line of a book is "I was born," then an opening line of a song should be equally short and pithy.

The best ones that I thought of
People in love by Art Brut-People in love lie around and get fat
Kick out the Jams by The MC5-Kick out the Jams Motherf**ker
Noelleat 8-27-2007
"Moving forward using all my breath / Making love to you was never second best..."
Modern English's song was definitely attention-getting in the early '80's!

Best ever? Hardly, but at least it's decent.

Hard to pick a "Best Song Ever", but this one would have to be in the running.

where is "my life is brilliant" from the song "you're beautiful?" i think that's the greatest song and the greatest opening line of ANY song!

Danat 8-27-2007
Whew! I can live with this. After some of the other choices these "experts" made I was almost certain their number one was going to be something from Barry Manilow...something like "I remember all my life, raining down as cold as ice." Guess we dodged a bullet, eh?

Another one from the Five Man Electrical Band's "Signs" (I know this is old)...
And the sign said "Long-haired freaky people need not apply"
So I tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why
He said "You look like a fine upstanding young man, I think you'll do"
So I took off my hat, I said "Imagine that. Huh! Me workin' for you!"
