".....well I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die." Fulsom Prison Blues. How do you top that?

    Those aren't opening lyrics.

That's a Kris Kristofferson song. You should credit the songwriter, not one of many singers who've covered the tune, for the line.

They did the same thing in their original list, crediting the opening of "All Along The Watchtower" to Jimi Hendrix instead of Bob Dylan.

I like Johnny Cash. I really do. But if you're choosing THIS opening line as one of his best, someone needs serious help.

I'm with blogger #1 on this. Johnny was great in him own right, and he wrote and recorded his own songs. So why not use one? Kristofferson wrote and recorded "Sunday Morning Coming Down," and his photo should be up there instead of Cash's.

Johnny ruled, no matter what he sand or what he said. There will never be another "man in black"
    RIP with all my love

Kris was more than happy Johnny Cash recorded this song. He has said many times, Johnny made it his own.

this is the song that belongs to Kris, he puts real heartfelt feeling into it. cash, well, that poor man couldn't carry a tune if it was in a bucket. still, some of his songs were good so one of his own songs should be in the running. cash just plagerized, i hate this. shame on you for putting this song in with the wrong singer!!

Pixie:... To see you insinuate that Cash couldn't carry a tune in a bucket... are you tone-deaf? Kristofferson may have written it, but I LITERALLY listen to a J.Cash collection every evening as I drift off to dreamland, and his voice is so beautifully hypnotic that it has taken this former insomniac to someone who can finally relax. he is UNTOUCHABLE, honestly. and Sunday Morning Comin' Down is one of the most heartfelt songs he had ever sang... it's CRAZY how 2 peeps can hear things and feel them in such different ways! I hope you grow to love the Man In Black - much love

Johnny Cash is a legeng. His voice was amazing. Why do you think he sold so much? Because people didn't like his singing. Hey let me buy this album cuz this guy sux. Yeah that is probably the way it went. My Bad you must be right. Cash didn't plagarize that would be to sing a song without the writer's permission and seeming how Johnny and Kris were friends actually in a group together (The Highwaymen check them out it you haven't already) it was with permission and most likely at a request that he did this song. Very Few people can have the amount of pain and strength in the same voice that Cash had.

If i rememeber correctly, Kris actually landed a helicopter in Johny's yard to have him listen to his music, and this was one of the songs. Yes both sang it, but Kris gave it to Johnny to sing first, for two reasons: 1) for people to hear the song and 2) for people to hear the name of the writer and get acquainted with Kris and his work. And, it worked perfectly - he accomplished both with his, as Johhny put it, "bold and very dangerous move". I mean, how many people land a helicopter in your yard!! They were great friends - he sang it because Kris WANTED him to PERIOD!

    What they SHOULD have used:
"Well my daddy left home when I was three,
he didn't leave much for ma and me,
just this old guitar and an empty bottle'o booze"....
