I refuse to take the fact that people think this is Otis Redding's best song! It's overrated in my book. A better opening lyric of his would be "I've been... loving youuuuuuuuu.... Too lo-o-ong... to stop nowwww" lol

I once read an article where they discussed at length the actual defintion of commonly misused words, one of them being the term 'Dock'. The article went on to explain that a DOCK is actually underwater, and the wooden structure jutting out into the water is actually the PIER.
The author ended the article with "P.S...don't tell Otis Redding any of this..." ;)

You've got to be kidding me! THIS line is in at #15?

    Puh-leeze!

    It's decent enough, but I'm thinking 20..., 25... tops.

and you've gotta be kidding me---you're actually smart enough to turn on a computer? you're certainly not smart enough to recognize a classic...

The opening lines are simple, yet powerful, because they tell the outline of the story at the outset. They prepare our minds for what follows; they make us ready to feel the sense of hurt and abandonment conveyed in the unforgetable words of this song, brought to us by the immortal voice of the artist Otis Redding.

One of the great soul singers, Otis, I miss you!

One of the all time classics from the 60s. Even now, when I hear it, I can imagine myself somewhere on a beach ... hearing the waves at the beginning of the song takes me there and then that first line draws you right into what Otis is singing about. It's great! Beats some of the other songs on this list by a mile!

not of my era in music but it tends to give one a glimpse of how slow and easy life was back then even if you had troubles. nowadays we still have to keep up with the running pack, no time to sit, collect outselves, and reflect.

Pixie....slow and easy life? What about not being allowed to vote until 1965 and what about the race riots? And Viet Nam....yea life was slow and easy. Now go play your horses and tell people about how much you make when discussing music. Tedious ass.

Otis is among the greatest rock n' roller ever. He is doubtless in the top 5 of all time. Light years ahead of most on this list. Right up there with Elvis, the Beatles, Rolling Stones........
This great song is by far his most famous, but not his best. If you like this, find some of his other stuff. Listen to "I've been loving you too long", or "These arms of mine", "I can't turn you loose". "Dock of the bay" was released after he died at age 26 in 1967. He barely had a chance to get his career going. Otis also composed Arethia's greatest hit, "RESPECT"

doggggz is right: Otis is among the greatest rock n' roller ever! He died in a terrible plane crash into Lake Mendota in Madison Wisconsin where he was to perform in conceert that night. My friends and I had tickets to see him but the concert never was to be.... what a loss of a fabulous artist.

Agree with Susan #7. I hear this song and wish I was sitting on the beach with a cool drink listing to waves. Love this song so soothing.

One of the older songs for me, but on my top favorites. Slow and easy? one of the lines in the song say "I can't do what ten people tell me to do, so I'll just remain myself". Collect yourself and reflect that. No doubt Otis was one of the greatest! I'm going to go to that bay someday just because of this song.

I must say that first Otis wasn't a Rock & Roller he was a soul singer. I personally thing that his "Try A Little Tenderness" is the greatest soul song ever performed but I would have to say the greatest Soul Singer is Marvin Gaye. It's sad the he died before this song became a hit. I had the pleasure of talking to the man that signed Otis and was there for the recording of every song he did except this one. He said Otis was magic in a studio whenever the song ended you just knew it was a hit. He said that Otis almost always got it right the first time but he also seemed to just instinctivly know what voice to use on each and every song he did. A Genius!!!
