what makes this a great opening line is: 1) It makes you want to hear more - you are hooked about the fate of these people and 2)The rhythm of the words, especially leading into the next line, "like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays".
At number four this seems way out of place, It always seems like whoever puts these things together always have a Springstein lover and then something like this gets way overrated. I would not put this in the top 25, and I don't think it would be his best example, how about the start of born to run his break out hit? Or Born in the USA?
Not even the best of Springsteen, who I always thought was over-rated. Two better ones spring right to mind: "I had a wife & kids in Baltimore, Jack, I went out for a ride & I never went back" (Hungry Hearts)"Take me now baby here as I am, pull me close try and understand, desire is the hunger is the fire I breath, love is the banquet on which we feed" (Because the Night) Of course Patti Smith did it better than Bruce ever could.
i liked jersey girl and a few others of his. not a fan and now that he's become a radical anti american, i don't think he should be listed here. this is america, i want american songs sung by people that love america. and too, he's not the humble guy that he was when he first started out. i think he's gone sour, toss him and his songs in the garbage.
SWAYS? HAHAHAHAHA! ...oh, yeah, and HUNGRY HEART? How old ARE you??? Quit making ignorant comments about a man you never got the pleasure to see - when he sang songs like this! Go back and listen to what is considered 'music' today - or are you a Disco lover?
so, i am 15 and my parents raised me on pretty much nothing but the Boss. Greatest artist of all time, and this is his BEST song, hands down. he is defanatly NOT anti american, and anyone who didnt realize he is oppinonated, has obviously never listened to the words of Born In the USA. and, to the people who commented about the line being wrong, according to his album(not the cd, the album) the line is as listed.
I am 13 and I was raised listening to BRUCEE! I have seen him 4 times in convert and he is an unbelievable performer! People that say he is anti-american are wrong. Bruce loves this country but he realizes like many other people that there are faults here and bad things that happen in government, and other places. This is probably in my top 5 of favorite bruce songs! I love the opening lyric! Thanks for putting Bruce on this list!

Gee, number four and they couldn't even get it right. Commonly thought to be 'Mary's dress waves' the correct lyric is 'Mary's dress sways.'

The last line of this song is the best... "It's a town full of losers, I'm pulling out of here to win"

No ho ho ho ho.....get some people who really know their music history please:
Sandy--the fireworks are hailing over Little Eden tonight
forcing a light into all those stoney faces left stranded on this warm July.
