What's That Song in the VW Convertible Commercial?

'Either Way,' by Wilco

Set to first track off Wilco's most recent album, the newest TV ad for the Volkswagen Beetle convertible tells an inspiring, feel-good tale of reform: Hipster slash car thief checks automobile doors until he finds the cheery, cherry-red Beetle open, easily finds keys (rendering the bug "hot") and promptly embarks on a life-altering cruise that compels him to kill his whole "steal a car today" plan.

The song fits well with VW's "When you get into a Volkswagen, it gets into you" slogan and its spiritedness reverberates through the entire LP. 'Sky Blue Sky' is the first album from WIlco since frontman Jeff Tweedy underwent rehab in the summer of 2004. Previously, Wilco earned mass critical acclaim for their breakout 2002 release, 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot' and won the Best Alternative Album Grammy for 2004's relatively gloomy 'A Ghost Is Born' LP. At Wilco's recent visit to Sessions, Tweedy joked about the rather sunny 'Sky,' "People look at the world so black and white" he told Spinner.com, "like 'Oh! Sober-happy record!' [or] 'Ohhh! On drugs, good art,' you know?"

The first in a series of six for the German automotive manufacturer, the commercial isn't the first licensing deal in which Wilco has been involved -- not by a longshot -- and the seasoned Americana rockers reminded fans of that on their official site post-outcry after the first commercial aired. "[We] have licensed hundreds of songs to television show and films worldwide." the band wrote. "And we feel okay about VWs. Several of us even drive them." Lesson: Get used to it, as well as five more upcoming car ads.
