Tori Amos Sings an Ode to Britney Spears
Between her underwhelming VMA peformance last Sunday -- lest we mention the evening's subsequent crotch shot -- and this summer's series of unfortunate head-shaving, paparazzi attacking events, one would be hard-pressed to find someone with heartfelt sympathy for Britney Spears. One, however, need not look any further than Tori Amos.During the singer-songwriter's concert in Melbourne, Australia on September 11, a day when most words addressed tragic fare of another kind, Amos turned her attention to the embattled pop star. "I have a comment," Amos began. "We've all seen it on the news." She then launched into a lilting, if melancholy, improv, singing, "Britney, they set you up/ ...This is what it looks like when a star falls/You're a mother but you need a mother to pick you up/I'm a mother but I need a mother to pick me up."
"You see a lot of women today -- maybe in magazines -- crawling out of cars and thinking it's sexy," Amos recently told Spinner. "[And] for the most part, you don't hear guys going, 'Wow! I am just blown away by that beauty or by that woman's way. There's something about her.' No. Do you know what they do? They laugh. They laugh when we're spreading our legs and crawling out of a car. It's tragic. Ultimately, we demean ourselves."
Amos is currently on tour in support of her latest album, 'American Doll Posse.' Hear the full Britney improv after the jump.

Beautiful Tori, Britney should have more supportive family around her instead of just her friends.

Tori is amazing. What a beautiful song. Unbelievable it's just an improv! Now *that* is actual talent. Britney should take notes.

Tori is amazing.
I wonder if Brit heard it and what she thinks?

I don't think Britney listens to Tori Amos. She doesn't seem to be that deep a thinker.

Wow. That is gorgeous. Tori Amos truly is amazing. And she's made me feel sympathy for Britney that I hadn't prior to listening to this song.

This song is so beautiful and every word of it is so true. It's amazing that while everyone is so busy criticizing everything that Britney's done lately, Tori took the time to write an understanding song about her. I love you Tori!

No one set her up but herself. Britney is not a child, she knew what she was doing. She drank and drugged all the night before the MTV awards show then drugged some more before the show. The vacant look is DRUGS, not "poor Britney looking so scared". She probably had no idea where she even was. She thumbed her nose, big time, at MTV. She was never really any good, if you look back. She was just skinnier, younger with other people taking care of the "FLASH" in her shows. She's no longer a sexy, pop singer. She's just one of many talentless females who has had their 15 minutes of fame. In reality she has turned out to be a skanky, slutty, lousy Mom self centered loser.

What Tori's saying is that MTV set Britney up, because they knew she would be awful (they even made Brit change the performance really close to the show time). Tori also references Disney because Britney used to be a Mouseketeer. Her parents shoved her into the limelight when she was just a child. No wonder she's fucked up - no wonder she doesn't want to deal with her parents (especially her mom who kind of reminds me of those creepy child beauty pageant queen moms from LA.) Really that whole star falls down thing is a comment on our celebrity obsession since we can't deal with reality or our own lives, yet we are happy to send people to die in a war so we can keep driving our fucking Hummers and stuffing our faces and buying iphones. You know what? Fuck Disney and fuck MTV and all their vapid commercialized bullshit. Maybe that's what Britney was saying in her "I don't really give a shit" performance on the VMA's.
