Fightin' Words: "Well I hope Neil Young will remember/ A southern man don't need him around anyhow" ('Sweet Home Alabama,' Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Neil Young's 'Southern Man,' his biting rant about Confederate racism, was what drew the ire of proud rednecks Lynyrd Skynyrd and prompted their musical response.
Judges' Decision: Draw, as Skynyrd remained huge Neil Young fans.

November 18 2007 at 1:30 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe line about "Southern Man don't need him around anyhow" might just be the most stupid lyric in the history of music. Wow, what a comeback to Young's song. You really showed him.

I mean after all it's not going anywhere but to some more smoke, alcohol and groupies to keep their mouths closed.

And they should do this because? Why should they donate or give money that they have earned to anyone? People who say this crap are the ones that never give any charity one cent but want others to do it for them or send their kids to school or pay for their kids day care LOL Get a job and donate your money.

November 18 2007 at 12:11 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAlso, they weren't rednecks...at least Van Zant wasn't. He was staunchly anti-gun and, towards the end of his life, anti-drug as well because he noticed how adversely drugs and booze were affecting his friends and bandmates. He did not want anyone in the band to indulge and would not allow it...and that was uncommon in the decadent 1970s. Anyway, the point is: Just because they were Southern does not automatically mean that they were rednecks or, as AOL phrased it, "proud rednecks."
November 18 2007 at 11:10 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt is a well-known fact amongst fans of both artists that they admired each other and were planning to record each other's songs until tragedy struck the Skynyrd camp in 1977. Those lyrics from "Sweet Home Alabama" were actually a joke between Van Zant and Young. Get your facts straight, people, and research musical history more carefully!
