Carina Round Takes to the Sky

On a brisk Monday night, 48 floors above the manic streets of Midtown Manhattan, British singer-songwriter Carina Round stood shoulder to shoulder against many of the city's architectural giants with a voice that radiated from her scarf-wrapped throat as far-reaching as the skyline that surrounded her -- which, is to say, seemingly infinite. The performance -- part of Gotham City's Artist in Residence series -- found Round, a self-possessed force of nature, stripping her three-album catalog to a bare-bones acoustic set that, even in its majesty, still managed to seduce to the underbelly. From the slow build of the blues-y 'Monument' to the delicate should've been that is 'Backseat of Your Mind,' she dizzied the crowd with lyrical riddles, broke sirens with a Bjork-ian wail and sang a love song to rest our pretty little heads.

Catch Round when she opens for Annie Lennox this fall, beginning October 8 in San Diego. See photos from the Monday night's performance, as well as a full list of tour dates, below.
