PhotoSynthesis: David Byrne

New York, 1997: I was shooting some publicity for David Byrne. We went to the piers off Chelsea [in Manhattan]. David ended up walking over to this garbage can and he picked the lid up off of it, and I saw him look inside it and wonder how clean this thing is. And without saying a word to me, he just climbed right in, squatted down, pulled the top over him and just peeked his head out of the top. So I notice this welder standing there. I said, "Hey, you want to be in the picture?" And he was like, sure, whatever. I recognized that I had three frames left in the camera on that roll of film. So I say, "OK, I'm done." And I usually take a couple of pictures afterward because a lot of time people let their guard down when you tell them you're done. So this guy started yelling out to one of his friends, "Hey, check out this guy in the garbage can!" So that was the last picture I took.

Average photos. Access to the stars, that I don't have. I have taken way better photos in a natural environment. Fraud!

Great photos! I've never been a fan of being photographed, especially "posed" shots. You capture the very element I want to see my favorite musicians in; their own.
