PhotoSynthesis: Nas

New York, 1993: That was the first Nas record. We were at the Queensbridge projects, where he's from. He really wanted to just be photographed in his environment. So we went walking around the corners that he hung out at, just trying to document him in the place that he grew up. I've done three album packages for him, and he and I get along really well. He's really photogenic and I like to document him. The thing I like about this photograph is that the cars on each side are the same exact car. They're, like, a 1988 Cadillac Seville or something. It just cracks me up that the same exact car is on opposite sides of the road.

I saw right away that the cars are not the same. For being such a great photographer, in this instance, Clinch was not very observant. He was looking at this scenario, yes, but he really didn't look closely at it.

The car on the left is a early 1980's Lincoln Continental and the car on the right is a late 1970's Cadillac Seville. They are very similar cars, as Lincoln tried to compete with Cadillac in the smaller cars.
