PhotoSynthesis: Tom Waits

Santa Rosa, Calif., 2004: I was on an assignment to photograph Tom Waits for Harp magazine, and I got a phone call from his publicist who said, "Tom would like you to come up to where he lives and go to the fair, because he wanted to take his son and nephew." I remember him showing up and having a bunch of things in the back of his truck, and one of then was this plastic gun. I remember him saying, "You think they'll let me in with this?" As we tried to get in, they actually tried to stop us. So we walked around the corner and he hid it in the inside pocket of his jacket and we went in. And when we got on the merry-go-round, he pretended he was the Lone Ranger riding away on his sea horse. It's probably one of my favorite photographic moments ever!
