Oxnard, Calif., 1998: He was recording the record 'Teatro' with Daniel Lanois in an old Mexican movie theater in Oxnard, Calif. I knew Daniel Lanois and I'm a huge Willie Nelson fan, but I had never photographed him. Dan said to me, "What have you been up to? I've been recording this thing with Willie Nelson." And I said, "Oh, man, please don't tell me you're done recording." And he said, "Yeah, we've finished up. But Wim Wenders is going to come up and film us performing the songs in the place that we recorded it. Why don't you come on out and shoot some pictures?" I was like, what?! So I said, "Yeah, maybe I'll do that." I hung up the phone and went to 1-800-cheaptickets and booked myself a flight. I spent three days hanging out at the studio while Wim Wenders was filming. They were all just hanging around playing music, and I got to shoot it.
