What's That Song in the iPhone Commercial?

'Perfect Timing (This Morning),' by Orba Squara
What do you get when you combine a mandolin, a glockenspiel, an accordion, a sitar, a violin, a harmonica, a toy piano, a xylophone, a ukulele -- and a talented lyricist? You probably wouldn't guess it's the jingle from the iPhone ad campaign, being that the commercial doesn't feature any vocals. And even if you happened to guess correctly, you'd still be wrong. The iPhone jingle is actually just the opening to the dulcet tune by Orba Squara. The full version of 'Perfect Timing (This Morning),' off the album 'Sunshyness,' showcases resident New York singer-songwriter Mitch Davis' skill with both words and instruments. When the opportunity arose for 'Perfect Timing' to be featured in the iPhone advertising campaign, Davis told Spinner that "the idea that Apple thought my song was the best choice for all those iPhone commercials is incredibly flattering." For a while he wasn't sure the deal had gone through, and for six months prior to seeing the commercial on the television, he "was on the verge of a heart attack every second of every day."
Davis also mentioned how much it meant that the people at Apple were so moved by the music alone they did not immediately gravitate towards the lyrics. "Although it would have been great if a vocal section were used in the ad, it feels especially good that they liked it based on the emotion of the music alone rather than liking it because the lyrics outwardly said something," he told us. "I love to be able to connect on a purely melodic level." He once shared in the blog Lifeskool that he enjoys writing about his everyday existence, finding himself most productive when he's in the studio recording.
