Craziest Costumed Acts: No. 4
- Posted by Spinner

In 1969, back when getting a tattoo was still considered odd, four guys (probably) from Louisiana decided to form a band, put eyeball masks over their heads and never take them off. Ever. Rumors persisted in the 1970s that the band was really the Beatles in disguise, but four decades and 60 albums later, the real identities of the Residents remain as mysterious as their avant-garde art rock.

For a first-time Residents listen, pick up (tough, though, out of print) or download a copy of "The King and Eye" - rather, um,unique remakes of Elvis tunes. Still accessable, as some Residents albums are rather "out there". Also glad to see them make this list.

Originally formed by Jay Clem, Homer Flynn, Hardy Fox and John Kennedy [3] [4] [5] [6], the band successfully maintained member anonymity for years [7]. In 1982, Clem and Kennedy left the band [8], and though Flynn and Fox have kept the band active since that time, purists consider post-1982 material to be substandard [9] [10].

While the eyeball masks (or rather, 3 eyeball masks and one skull mask since Mr. Red Eyeball got stolen) are their most well-known, they actually have quite a few different costumes that they've appeared in over the years.
