Embattled R&B Singer Goes Country
- Posted on Oct 19th 2007 10:30AM by David Sprague
Given his propensity for groan-inducing lyrics, we're obviously eager to hear what sort of concepts Bobby Brown might be able to work into material he devises as part of his new career as a country singer. Granted, "saddling up the ol' gelding" doesn't have quite the same cachet as some of his more urbane material about 'Humpin' Around.' Brown is said to have signed on for a new CMT show in which cowboy-hatted carouser John Rich -- of Big and Rich fame -- will reinvent him as a country star. That might sound like a longshot, but if you think about it, Brown does have a fair amount of dirt-road cred in his past, what with exhibiting fairly extensive knowledge of the agricultural products of several South and Central American lands -- by which, of course, we mean his well-known fondness for a good chayote.

You all are doing exactly want Mr. Brown wants. He's an act in himself. He wants money and ratings and he's succeeding at both.

October 19 2007 at 7:50 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOk...first things first...what is currently called country music is nothin' more than frustrated rockers who can't land a gig in the rock world. Real country & western music is just that...music of love, life, hard times, reflections. Bobby Brown doing so-called country music?...oh please!.
That's like having James Brown doing country music..nada!..never happened. I'm a professional musician who's been in the business just over 40 years but I grew up in the 60's loving the Beatles and Motown and I successfully intertwined both genre's to cater to a diverse audience. Bobby Brown's reputation will get there long before the music will. Charley Pride made his mark on country music due to his tenacity and determination to succeed, despite his reputation as a 'flat' singer.
If Bobby Brown makes his 'mark' in country music, it won't be because of his singing ability.
18. U GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!! A BLACK GUY DOING COUNTRY MUSIC? HE COULDN'T CARRY A COUNTRY TUNE IN A FIVE GALLON BUCKET!!
Who can tell anymore? All the so-called "country" hitmakers are trying to sound like R%B singers, emphasizing their melisma, etc.
. . . oh, and I'll believe Bobby Brown has gone country when I see the release. Not that other so-called R&B artists haven't; have you ever listened closely to Percy Sledge, Solomon Burke or Joe Tex, among others? It don't get no more "country" than some of their hits.

Don't know him, but if he is American, let us give him a break.
1. The comment of Brown having married a 15 year old has nothing to do with his "going country." Believe it or not, there are some things that we country people do not do.
Really? Loretta Lynn got married at 12, didn't she? Not to say it's common, but don't say "there are some things that we country people do not do", when you should know that's false. Say something like, "sickos are sickos, no matter what kind of music they like."
Ray Charles, Sings Country And Western. A classic C&W album. That is certainly NOT to say Bobby Brown can touch RC. Any port in a storm Bobby.
