What's That Song in the iPod Touch Commercial?

'Music Is My Hot, Hot Sex,' by CSS

If you thought the catchy tune in the new iPod touch commercial was by Mika -- the British pop singer known for his 2006 release 'Life in Cartoon Motion' -- just because you saw his brightly colored cover art being displayed, you'd be wrong! It's actually 'Music Is My Hot, Hot Sex,' by the Brazilian group Cansei de Ser Sexy (known as CSS for short), which translates to "Tired of Being Sexy," a statement supposedly once made by Beyonce.

The 30-second spot was created by 18-year-old Nick Haley, who posted his homemade advertisement to YouTube in September. Creative execs for Apple's ad agency contacted the young filmmaker about re-creating the ad for broadcast on TV. Little more than a month later, Haley's reworked ad was all over the television airwaves. The teenage director has said that his inspiration came from the lyrics, stating, "My music is where I'd like you to touch." About the ad, CSS guitarist Ana Rezende said to Spinner, "How he found our song, I have no idea, but we're really happy that he did."

The six-piece band, which released its debut album in 2006, recently told Spinner that there was never any intention to write a song that could be used in advertisements. Said Rezende, "No one knew that the 2007 iPod would be called the iPod Touch in 2005 when the song was written." Since their formation in 2003, CSS have performed with Primal Scream, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Klaxons, just to name a few bands. Headed by lead singer Lovefoxxx -- whom the British newspaper the Guardian called a "miniature vixen" -- CSS are known for their wild performances and lewd lyrics. According to Rezende, she enjoyed the commercial -- which struck her as somewhat surreal -- quite a bit. Her only criticism: "I rather have the song playing than the artwork shown. Actually, people think that this song is Mika's."
