'Tonight the Streets are Ours,' Richard Hawley
From 2007's 'Lady's Bridge'
Classic, epic, twangy, rockabilly, soulful and timeless are all words that can be used to describe the work of Richard Hawley . On his latest effort. 'Lady's Bridge.' the Sheffield, England native embraces the soul of Roy Orbison and the jangly rock of Johnny Cash, leveled of by a jazzy Burt Bacharach influenced undertone. I can't stop listening to Hawley's new long player, particularly the hook-laden '50s-tinged 'Tonight the Streets are Ours.' The tune evokes musical purity with its heartfelt vocals, rhythmic Spector-esque chorus and a jangly Jonnhy Marr guitar riff. This is what Elvis Costello should sound like in 2007.
