The Pipettes Play Dress-Up, Avoid Hecklers at Close of U.S. Tour

British trio the Pipettes will wrap up their first major U.S. jaunt at the end of November. Touring in support of their debut album, 'We Are the Pipettes,' has been a blast for members RiotBecki, Gwenno and Rosay, especially when the band rolled into Oregon at the height of Halloween festivities. "In Portland, we had a girl right at the front of the stage who was dressed up as a dead Pipette," Becki told Spinner, "which I thought was quite charming." She added, jokingly, "There were more people dressed as Pipettes than Amy Winehouse, which is always a good sign."

The merriment continued in other locales as well. The ladies managed to find fans who know both their moves and their songs. "I think it's really nice playing in the places where we've played before," Becki said. "People are familiar with you so they know the words, and are coming with polka dot outfits on, and they do the dances," she explained.

Aside from their old tour haunts, new stops have also proved fruitful, and they've been able to avoid encounters with the rude dudes at the back of every crowd. "We haven't even had any heckling," Becki enthused. "Often, there will be some drunk man who decides it will be fun to abuse us, but there hasn't even been any of that. Everyone's been really nice and really into it." Almost everyone, at least.

The Pipettes' new costumes, designed by frontwoman Gwenno's sister Annie, have been met with some criticism. "We've had some bad reactions about them. I don't know why," Becki mused. "People are just like, 'That's an outfit a Barbie doll would wear,' and it's like, 'Yeah, that's kind of the point. It's a uniform. It's about a costume. It's not supposed to look like normal clothing!'"
