Bolinas, Calif., 1971: Just playing the guitar.... David Crosby's first solo album called 'If I Could Only Remember My Name' -- well, he commissioned me to go up to Northern California and photograph all of his friends who had played on the album. So we went to Grace Slick and Paul Kantner's house, and a lot of [David's] friends gathered there so we could photograph them all. So there was Phil Lesh from the Grateful Dead and, of course, there Grace and Paul, and Jerry Garcia and David Crosby and one other guy, from Quicksilver Messenger Service. And they just spent the afternoon playing music and smoking grass, and I was sitting on the floor right in the middle of all of them just kind of swiveling around trying to be invisible and just photographing everything that went on. That's the only day I ever met Jerry Garcia, the only day I ever photographed him, but it was sure fun to be there.
