Sheriff John Brown draws his gun to prevent the man from leaving town, so the fellow defends himself, firing once. "I shot the sheriff, but I didn't shoot the deputy," he clarifies. Give him credit -- this man will only take the heat for what he actually did.

If you listen to the words, I think the sheriff killed the deputy and is getting ready to blame it on Marley/Clapton after killing him.

You probably just heard Claptons version first, thats why you think its better. It seems like it always goes that way. As much as I love Claptons cover, nothing beats Marleys original songs.
