12 Best Christmas Songs: No. 12

'I Want an Alien for Christmas'
    --Fountains of Wayne (1997)

Gimme, gimme, gimme. Have you seen a kid's wish list for Santa these days? Wii, iPods, iPhones and countless other bank-breaking iCan't-Live-Withouts. At least this fine young man has a lively imagination. He doesn't need a bike, and like the rest of us, he's not up for more ugly sweaters. If Santa's such a wizard, why not ask for "a little green guy, about three feet high, with 17 eyes"?

how come there aren't any "NEW" Christmas classics being made? I love all the old ones, but where's the new generations contribution? And I mean on the same level as " White Christmas" and the like.

oh, so the ramone's merry christmas (i don't wanna fight) is complete nonsense, but 'i want an alien for christmas' is a holiday classic? fountains of wayne is one of these groups that people with no actual sense of taste in music like to say they listen to because it makes them sound like they know something special (see also: coldplay). i can't say anything about this song because like about 99% of everyone else on this board, i've never heard it.

"Alien" is a great little tune by an outstanding band that celebrates powerpop music. The song was never in wide release but can be found on Fountains of Wayne's "Out of State Plates" album. You might also be familiar with their "Winter Valley Song" being used on a current Land's End TV ad. BTW, I know a great deal about music and have loved this band from the start. Please don't group me in with the Coldplay crowd.

Hey Spinner Staff - you guys are useless and have no taste in music. Find a new industry. This list looks like it was made by a bunch of college kids who add obscure songs and hip hop just to look cool and fit in. That's the only explanation, because this list is not based on popular opinion, airplay, votes, or any other rational thing. You are all either too young to have grown up with good Christmas music, don't celebrate Christmas at all, or just have bad taste. Which is it?

Check out John Williams' song from Home Alone. Also Barbra Streisand's "The Best Gift," from her Christmas album.

I can maybe agree with #s 3, 6, and 11, but the rest of these clowns couldn't carry a Christmas tune in a dump truck. Who ever compiled this list was snorting a little too much ajax....

Except for Elvis' "Blue Christmas", I haven't even HEARD any of the other songs.

    Who compiled this stupid list?

The most beautiful Christmas carol of all time is "O Holy Night". The melody, the lyrics, the message, are absolutely beautiful.

Also love "Hark the Herald Angels Sing".

These songs have NOTHING to do with Christmas. Try the phenomenal song, "Mary Did You Know?" (..this boy that you delivered would soon deliver you.. etc.) That song is what (WHO) this holy season is all about. The One, God in flesh, who was born to die for us so that through faith in Him we could gain access to an eternity with Him. Don't take "Christ" - which means "Messiah" - out of Christmas.
