12 Worst Christmas Songs: No. 12

Christmas songs can reconnect us to our childhood sense of wonder, or drive us right up the freakin' chimney. For the 12 days of Christmas, we've made our lists of the naughtiest and nicest non-novelty rock-era ditties. You check 'em twice.

    'Santa Baby'
    --Madonna (1987)

Madonna had been around the block far too many times to get away with playing the infuriating Betty Boop-ish ingenue. When Eartha Kitt made a case for being a good, deserving girl -- "think of all the fellas that I haven't kissed" -- it was mildly amusing. When Madonna trotted out the line, it was just another reason for Sean Penn to start throwing ornaments.

I just happened to see this side line in the music section. The first song that came to mind was Madonnas' version of Santa Baby. Yes, she is immensely successful, yes, she is gifted, talented and so on. She is a living institution. BUT... This is probably the most horrible Christmas cover ever. No, I am not jealous of her success, I admire her. She should not have done this, every time it comes on the radio I cringe and either turn the radio off or change the station. I think the original is one of the greatest 'in your face' Christmas songs ever. Sorry Madonna fans, it really is no good.

You know what? Personally, I don't care for Madonna as a singer. She just doesn't have much range or depth as a vocalist. She might be better than Britney, I guess, but that's not saying much. On the other hand...none of that matters. Artists and singers touch people in different ways. People get angry when you diss their favorites because it feels like you are disrespecting THEM. If you like Madonna, more power to you. Elvis is my personal all time favorite, but I know there are lots of people who hate his guts. Too bad...I like what I like, and you like what you like. I say, if the music moves you, no matter who it is, then who cares if Joe Blow next door likes it or not?

Madonna's rendition of this song is a bit out there, but it makes her money right ? her fans buy it and i guess that's why she is the top selling female performer of our time...multi millionare, so i'm sure she doesn't care about what we think... would you ???

    Hello Kevinat 11-27-2008

Madonna's CD sales have most definitely not dropped since she kissed Britney on MTV Awards, in fact they have gone up, the CD American Life was released BEFORE the kiss and was one of Madonna's lowest selling CD's at 4 Million Worldwide, then came Confessions on A Dance Floor which sold 8 Million and this was the CD that came out AFTER the kiss. Now this year she released Hard Candy which has so far sold 5 Million copies and is still going strong, if your going to make a statement then you need to check your facts. This year 4 Minutes was Madonna's biggest single for her since she released the song "Music" back in 2000. And now her current Sticky & Sweet Tour is going on the books as the highest grossing tour EVER by a female in which she is breaking her own record that she held for the Confessions Tour.

Never heard so many negative comments. Perhaps your negativity is a symptom of not reading books. Oops! Sorry, that's negative too, no? Actually, Madonna looks great. Saw her in Lincoln Center back in the day. Back in the day when so many people were great and positive and actually fun and smart. Really sexy. Haven't seen sexy in years. But, that was then, this is now. In person you could feel her magic was going to go on for years and years. Shine on Madonna. Oh, innocents, Madge is an English term.

You guys are nuts, this song is great! Def one of my favorite Christmas songs. Madonna's version is totally tongue in cheek and one of the best versions of this song. Stop being so hateful!

I like the song, "Betty Boop-esque" and all. I think it's precious. And I'm not normally a Madonna fan. Eartha Kitt's was fine. Variety is the sice of life. How many of us like Stevie Nicks' "Silent Night???" Get with the times.

Whoever wrote this list has horrible taste, and is obviously too young to know what they are talking about. Band Aid's "Do They Know it's Christmas Time" was made by a compilation of artists to raise money for starving people in Africa. Not only is it a great song, but to have the balls to put this as the worst means that you should burn in hell.

I agree with just about all of this EXCEPT the number one worst song! "Do They Know It's Christmas Time" is a moving song that epitomizes the very meaning of Christmas--GIVING!
As God gave to us, so WE must give to the underprivileged.
These songs, except #1, are pretty much crap!

By far the best unusual song is 'The 12 Days After Christmas' by Fred Silver. It chronicles the misery of living with all those rotten gifts, like the Partridge, the 7 swans, etc. and the mess they cause around the house. It was originally written for Carol Burnett and has traveled around the world. See if you can get a copy, you won't be sorry!

Here's some of the text of the song I recommended, search it on Youtube and hear it performed:

    The 12 Days AFTER Christmas

    The first day after Christmas
My true love and I had a fight.
And so I chopped the pear tree down
And burned it just for spite!
    Then with a single cartridge
    I shot that blasted partridge
My true love gave to me.

    The second day after Christmas
I put on me old rubber gloves
    And very gently
    Wrung the necks
    Of both the turtledoves
My true love gave to me.

Madonna herself should be #12, with or without a song. She is a has been that never should have been.

Oh Good.. here is where I can finally say what's under my Breath, and brother it needs to be said, or others may say Vented!!. I am a one of a kind Christmas listener of Music!. What is very Puzzling to me, is why so many woman out there that is already Famous, tries to hard to re-make a certain Christmas Song, to the point, to where it sounds like pure S- - - .. it's Horrible!!.. and the Artist knows which ones they are, it's mostly on the Woman's side. They start the Music on this WOAH.. AH..WHOA WOAH WOAH EHEH EHEH EHEH.. Now seriously folks, who gives a damn about a spiraling downward voice, at the beginning of a Christmas song??, some women do have a beautiful voice, but when they try to change a 100 year old music tune to sound something more different to the singers liking, and it's hurts their career, that is the reason why!!!... you'll hear people say, well she ruined that song for Christmas!. If you're going to sing a Christmas Song, one that is very well known, sing it close to what it is supposed to sound like, your voice can even make it sound more beautiful, if it's done in it's original format, if you're an Artist that's already liked by millions, don't try to change the future of Christmas Music, try maybe adding more bells to your background!. So keep Christmas Music - Christmas Music! .. Please don't try to change real Christmas Music to Rap, Rock and Roll, Fast Beats, just be Your Damn Self!. I assure you, Christmas has never been about Rap.. and people who try to change it to sound Rap like.. are mostly Losers.. on the road to no where!. Christmas Songs will never be made to sound like Rap.
