12 Worst Christmas Songs: No. 2

'Please, Daddy (Don't Get Drunk This Christmas)'
--John Denver (1975)

The late Rocky Mountain troubadour sometimes introduced this song as a funny little ditty that took on more serious overtones over time. It's hard to see what could have been funny about a seven-year-old pleading with Daddy not to pass out under the tree. Not when you consider that Denver had two DUI arrests before his death in 1997.

What on earth made the usually good John Denver do this rubbish. An attempt to send up English Victorian
morality tales?
Sub standard though it is, I've heard more than 12 christmas songs far worse than this

WHY DID HE HAVE TO DO A DRUNK SONG? sheeeesh

AND..

I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THE "12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS" SUNG BY...(WHO KNOWS WHO SHE IS?) ABOUT GETTING "BOOZE GIFTS" DIDN'T MAKE THE #1 ALL TIME LOUSY IRRESPONSIBLE SONG "EVER". I'M SICK OF EVPLAINING TO KIDS THAT SHE IS PRETENDING..AND THEY WANT TO KNOW "WHY" NICE HUH??

I agree re: Daddy, Don't Get Drunk. . . John Denver's demise would have bothered me if he hadn't written "Sunshine on my Shoulders."

While I agree this was not one of his best, it does NOT deserve to be on this list. John was one of the best songwriters of the 20th century (he wrote songs with meaning, not the mindless dribble of today) and I still miss him.

A song not written by Denver, it was always great to hear him do this song live. The sad thing about it, is the fact that too many families go thru the abuse of alcohol and drugs not only during the holidays, but year round. And so many kids grow up with this. A light hearted way of looking at a serious problem.

It was crazy living with my mother, while my siblings and I were growing up. She was a flaming alcoholic and would drink every holiday, but her favorite holiday to get smashed at was Christmas. Yes, Momma passed out under many a tree, puked on presents, and she would usually pass out in her Xmas dinner. Face first in the plate worked for Momma. So dear 'old dead John Denver, I definitely
know what it's like to beg and plead not for Momma
to get drunk this Christmas. Sad thing about John Denver is Too bad his kids didn't beg for him not to fly that plane while being drunk. Maybe if they
did that, Johnny would still be with us...

John Denver wasn't drunk when his plane crashed. It was an experimental aircraft with design flaws. It failed to switch to the auxillary fuel tank so he in effect, ran out of gas.
They splashed the "was he drunk" stuff all over the front pages but buried the results of blood alcohol tests in small print at the bottom of back pages.

While I agree this song is really substandard for the artist, I do think that it is nowhere NEAR 2nd worst. Every song above it should preceed it. Not only that, this song is NEVER played on the radio so it must have made the list by someone who just dislikes Denver. I can see it making the lsit if it is played to death like the other pitiful trash on the list.

I happen to have this song by Alan Jackson and I think its great. Not all songs can be happy and Jolly and unfortunately this reflects what happens a lot during the holidays. If a song like this can perhaps hold a mirror up to someones face and show them a not so nice image and maybe be just the thing they need to change, then its done its job, and so has the artist.

This was popular in its time (which I actually remember but I bet a lot of you don't) and I remember it as an anti-drinking song. In 1975 (right before the disco craze), getting so drunk you were barfing and passing out was considered cool; I remember getting the stuffing beaten out of me for NOT drinking so while it's crap now (and then, I admit), it had a message when it was released that got lost over time.

Jayne, you need some counseling. Maybe a good Christmas present to yourself would be help with your anger problem. Not everyone who gets a DUI is a falling down drunk. And no, I've never had a DUI and I don't drink!
