Singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg died at his home in Maine on Sunday, three years after being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. He was 56.

"He fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully at home in Maine with his wife Jean at his side," a post on his Web site confirmed. "His strength, dignity and grace in the face of the daunting challenges of this disease were an inspiration to all who knew him."

Fogelberg, whose 1981 double-disc album, 'The Innocent Age,' brought him to mainstream prominence with three Top Ten singles ('Hard to Say,' 'Same Old Lang Syne' and 'Leader of the Band'), released his last album, 'Full Circle,' in 2003 -- just one year before his diagnosis.

Dan Folberg's music was my mainstay for many years. It was nice that someone from Peroria made made it big, we all had dreams. He will be truly missed. Farewell, Dan. I'm sure you'll continue to make music.

It is truly sad about Dan Fogelberg's death from prostate cancer. He was a genius singer and song writer...if you can make a person cry over a first love, a parent or a horse, and you can shanghai Glenn Frey into singing backup on "Hard to Say," you have done your job. Rest well, Dan.

i loved dan fogelbergs music. and though it is always sad when someone passes, his passing is toching me in a way i didnt expect. i think ive fiquered out why. i can think of a time in my life and i can think of one of his songs for that time period. he wrote the sound track of a lifetime/life frame. i wish i had figured that out early enough to jot that in a "fan" note to tell him tbat. oh well.... rest in peace. prayers to his family and friends.

OK one of my faves is from Netherlands:
Off in the Netherlands I heard a sound
Like the beating of heavenly wings
And deep in my brain I can hear a refrain
Of my soul as she rises and sings
Anthems to glory and anthems to love
Hymns filled with earthly delight
Like the songs that the darkness composes to worship the light...

Thanks, Dan. A true gift, to the world.

I LOVE Dan's music and the energy and life and love and I have LOVED it since way back when. Thanks Dan for so many special, magical moments and songs and........ as you said so well....

Love when you can, cry when you have to, Be who you must, that's a part of the Plan, Await your arrival with simple survival, and one day we'll all understand.

The Leader of the Band has died. Prostate cancer took this young 56 year old singer/songwriter. It has been said that had it been caught earlier, Dan might have survived. As a prostate cancer survivor I was diagnosed at age 47 (quite by accident). Fogelberg's diagnosis happened when he was 52 and by then it was in advanced stages. As a professional speaker ( http://www.chuckgallagher.com ) I have the opportunity to speak to groups nation wide. While my presentations don't center around this disease, I use every opportunity available to encourage men to get checked early and often. A simple blood test done soon enough could mean the difference between life and death.
