'Rise Up With Fists,' Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins
From 2006's 'Rabbit Fur Coat'
Sure, Jenny Lewis swapped her usual indie rock partners from Rilo Kiley for a pair of soulful and tuneful identical twins. Sure, she blended rock, folk, country and gospel -- and managed to make it all work. Sure, she references God half a dozen times throughout the track and yet, this song still can't get out of my head.
I don't usually listen to music that may be considered borderline blasphemy, but when it comes to 'Rise Up With Fists,' I'm swayed to be right there with Jenny Lewis, questioning hypocritical leaders and members of society, alike. This may be some of Lewis' best work so far as she crafts such an unimaginably pure and simple melody, pairs it with brutally honest lyrics and tops it with a layer of light but sultry vocals. All together, it can't help but make this song unforgettably and ironically beautiful.
