'Satan's River,' Porter Wagoner

This haunting country waltz from the final album by the Nashville master of the twisted lyric shows he still had a way with words as well as with the voice that carries them. Wagoner, who died in October at age 80, concocts a harrowing image of yachts cruising down the River Styx transporting doomed human cargo. This is a man who is plainly desperate to get right with his Maker after a lifetime of trifling and sin. Let's hope this last good work offered him safe passage. Listen to the song!
