Umphrey's McGee Pay Tribute to Peter Tosh
Reggae legend Peter Tosh -- a founding member of the Wailers -- was assassinated on September 11, 1987, but his spirit was recently resurrected in Jamaica with help from Chicago rock band Umphrey's McGee, who performed a trio of shows on the island as part of the inaugural Caribbean Holidaze festival. During the band's encores, Umphrey's welcomed Tosh's son, Andrew, to the mic to sing a few of his father's greatest hits, including 'Legalize It,' 'Equal Rights' and 'You Can't Blame the Youth.'Mindful that Umphrey's accomplishments include a main stage performance at Lollapalooza and numerous guest slots with the Dave Matthews Band, frontman Brendan Bayliss tells Spinner that "playing with Andrew Tosh was one of the personal highlights of my musical career."
Of course, it didn't exactly hurt that the stage was oceanside at the infamous Hedonism III resort. "The setting was absolutely perfect," agrees Bayliss. "On the beach, just a few feet from the water and under the stars with friends."
