Clay Aiken Asks: Who Is This Guy Monty Python?

In just a few days, Clay Aiken is about to be transformed into a brave and gallant knight of song and dance, as he endeavors to join the cast of the Broadway musical 'Monty Python's Spamalot.' Far be it to surmise that this most famous second banana of the 'American Idol' franchise possibly may have been miscast, but not only did he admit to not really getting the revered British comedy troupe's humor, he was laboring under a strange notion of exactly who or what this Python is. "I thought Monty Python was a person until three months ago," Aiken told Newsweek. And upon first exposure to the Python brand of absurdist comedy, the singer was initially none too impressed. "The first time I saw it I thought it was the stupidest thing I'd ever seen in my entire life," he added. Though some may sneeringly dismiss the Broadway stage as a place for wusses and wimps, Aiken said he has been asked to get physical in unaccustomed ways to prepare for his role as the chickenhearted chevalier Sir Robin. "It hurts so bad," he said. "I don't know if it's I'm not coordinated or using muscles I never had to use before," he admitted, confiding that as a result he "couldn't even get off the toilet the other day."
We're guessing this production must be quite different from the movie version.

(1) "Spamalot" producer Mike Nichols and co-creator Eric Idle personally asked Aiken twice before he agreed to accept the part. I can't imagine that he is miscast if Nichols and Idle chose him. They even had some new music written for him. (2) Aiken was born in 1978. Most of Monty Python's work was done before his time. Lots of people don't know much about Monty Python, and even more people don't "get" the humor. Besides, the comment about Monty Python being a "person" is a joke. You've heard of jokes, right? (3) Aiken has already been interviewed several times about "Spamalot" and has made the same comment each time about initially thinking it was stupid. Each time he added that when he saw it the second time, he thought it was the funniest thing he'd ever seen. I suspect he said the same thing to Newsweek, but the "reporter" chose not to use that part. Besides, it IS stupid. That's what makes it funny. (4) There is no movie version of "Spamalot." Perhaps you are thinking of the 1975 movie "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," which is quite different from the musical.

Yeah, and I was born in 1961, which is why I can be forgiven for thinking that Mozart is an AFTER DINNER SNACK? Let's face it, Aiken is a no-talent moron. They wrote songs SPECIFICALLY for him? What was wrong with the existing material that audiences seemed to be EATING UP? Maybe poor Troy couldn't hit those notes? I expect better from Idle than to bring this low level of talent (generated by a show that basically showcases crappy power-ballads in a karaoke setting) aboard the Spamalot production. Boo!
And, anyone who doesn't think the Python stuff was hysterical at FIRST VIEW... doesn't have a funny bone.

Hey Mick, its Clay not Troy. Troy used to QB the Dallas Cowboys. Remember him?

I see that after Jasmine posted that we had a couple of
spammers/haters posting junk. I don't understand why people try to
bash good people.
The first post by Jasmine says it very nicely and I agree. Some
reporters/people don't understand Clay's humor either. Some
reporters/people just make up their mind that they don't like Clay
before they ever meet him or find out what a wonderful person he is.
Some reporters/people are just sheep that read what someone else says
and runs with it instead of doing their research to find out anything
about him. Some reporters/people are just haters of people with real
talent and are jealous so they use their writing tools to try to
destroy them.
I'm so glad that I'm a person that enjoys great talent and likes an
honorable man with great character and morals like Clay Aiken. If
there were more people like Clay Aiken, the world would be a much,
much better place for all people.

Clay will be a great asset to the show! I think it's fairly common when a show brings in a star from outside of Broadway, to write more material to suit them. Plenty of people don't "get" MP and their brand of humor first thing, but at least Clay gave it another shot at the urging of Sean, the drummer from "Spamalot" who was in his summer tour and Christmas show.

Okay, anyone who uses "It's before my time" to explain why they are unfamiliar with something is officially an idiot. With videos, DVD's, television and jeez, books, that's just not an excuse. Just say, I'm not familiar with them and keep your stupidity hidden for just a little bit longer.

Uhhh - Clay's HUMOR?
Shawnat 1-15-2008
Clay Aiken as the brave Sir Robin, how perfect. They are obviously making the Sir Robin a little more moronic for this part.

Will someone please tell him that his 15 minutes are up.

Hey Mick,
I expect better from Idle than to bring this low level of talent , you mean Idol?

What is "shocking" about any Idol's "cluelessness"

A good friend and client recently entered the contest for American Idol in Atlanta. She is a local talent. She is an excellent vocalist on any level, intellegent and very beautiful. She was cast out in the first preliminary judging. I guess it goes to show what the American public is looking for in an "IDOL". Just one more detail making us question just how wonderful it is to be an "American"

If being a nitwitted closet-case no-talent clown-dog equates to being full of "character and morals" then by God Aiken is the most character and morality-full performer out there. Egad...what reality TV has forced upon us.

What's an "Aiken"?

Hmmmm. Lets see; there is a war raging, a presidential race grinding away, a country with thousands of people with no health insurance & THIs is what we are talking about?
