On This Date in 1962: Liverpool record-store proprietor Brian Epstein signs the Beatles to a five-year management contract, promising to secure the up-and-coming quartet a major-label deal. The Almanac Advises for January 24: "Today may be your lucky day! Take a chance on a longshot racehorse or pick up a lottery ticket or two. You just might find yourself hitting a huge jackpot."
