Fans Want the Heads of Rockers

Bring me the head of Ted Nugent. Or Rod Stewart, or Barry White. That's what the rapidly multiplying devotees of the viral website Sleeveface have been saying. Inspired by a bored British club DJ who held up the cover of a vinyl copy of 'McCartney II' as if the image were his own head, hundreds of contributors have submitted photos of themselves posing with album covers featuring close-up head shots of artists ranging from Cibo Matto to Johnny Mathis.

Instigator Carl Morris tells the San Francisco Chronicle that he was initially a bit embarrassed by his little stunt. "What sensible grown adult would do such things?" he jokes.

As it turns out, plenty of them. The site has bubbled over into an enthusiastic following on Flickr and spawned apparent copycats, including Bookface and Balloonface. Sleeveface "relies on vinyl and people getting together," says Morris, "and these are both undeniably good things." The fan base has even gone global. "It works in any language," says Morris. Just don't tell the Nooge.
