The Tunnel of Love album has a section of three songs that have to rank as the most depressing trilogy EVER about a slipping marriage: Two Faces, Brilliant Disguise and One Step Up.

BTW, "One Step Up" is one of the meanest love songs ever. Not only is Bruce singing about thoughts of having an affair, while having guilty dreams of his wife, but back-up singer (then paramour, then next-wife) Patti Scialfa sings back up on it. Imagine what hearing this song must have done to his first wife.

The words of this song, along with the words of "Brilliant Disguise" are enough to break your heart. You hear the heart of a man knowing it's over, and taking part of the blame. I love the poetry of NJ's Boss!!!

Bruce plays a pink guitar because he is a bad ass.

Also, this song is not to be confused with the Dire Straits song or the Green River song of the same name (Both songs recorded before the Boss. 1985 and 1980, respectively).
