'By the Time I Get to Phoenix'
--Glen Campbell (1967)
He knows she'll laugh when she first reads the goodbye note, since he's tried to leave her so many times before. He'll be in Albuquerque when she dials his number around lunchtime; all the way to Oklahoma by nightfall, when she'll realize this time it's for good. One of the most-covered songs of its time, it just goes to show the universal agony of the protracted breakup. Download Glen Campbell on Napster

Fast Forward about 40 years and you have the internet version of "running away" - being asked for a divorce via e-mail as my husband did to me! He was equally cowardly - and there wasn't a pretty song to go along with it.

WOW! When I saw the category I immediately thought of this very song, although I'm not remotely a country music fan and haven't heard it in 40 years. As a young child in the 60s whose parents were on the verge of breaking up, hearing this popular song was so painful to me; it didn't help that my mother played the album almost daily as she wallowed in her sadness. Gosh, talk about opening up 40 year old wounds. Damn. (Postscript: the parents actually didn't break up, although they probably should have in retrospect.LOL.)
