'You Oughta Know'
--Alanis Morissette (1995)
Like 'You're So Vain,' Alanis' signature song involves an unnamed lover whose identity has been the subject of mucho speculation over the years. Was it old boyfriend Dave Coulier? Matt LeBlanc? Any number of hockey players? We're partial to the rumor that it was actually Coulier's 'Full House' co-star Bob Saget. Buy on iTunes

I have to agree that this was the song I loved to listen to after my man split from me- blasting down the road as I drove. Alanis is the queen of pissed off love songs.

Alanis sucks and has always sucked and yes, I am a female. She can't sing worth crap, the words are so stupid and make no sense...I'm glad she's a thing of the past....her warbling voice is like fingernails on a blackboard

She's hardly a thing of the past. She just put out a new album a couple months ago.
You say the words are so stupid and make no sense. Well, they are very to the point for the most part (and the one slightly cryptic lyric isn't even that hard to understand), so the language must really need to be plain for you to understand them. I think that's rather unfortunate, as the greatest lyrics may be totally lost on you.
I'm not saying that everyone has to like the music or the singing. I'm just saying that, if you read the lyrics on their own, you may very well see how it's one of the greatest kiss-off's of all time.

My husband and his girlfriend love her!

Actually, I thought that Alanis' song was one of the best to describe the pain of being abandoned by the man you loved. As far as I'm concerned, she's right up there with Julie London's Cry Me A River.

There has been no more venomous line than this one ever written...totally should have been number one.

This song along with Blondie's "One Way or Another" both sound like they were sung by some Psycho bitch from hell.

Eh, I've never liked her voice. But the lyrics in this song are so vicious.

This song is awesome!

This entire ALBUM is incredible. Most of the songs with the exception of One Hand In My Pocket and Head Over Feet are pretty sharp-tongued. I always wondered, "Whatever will happen to her music career if Alanis is happy in a relationship??" I've thought the same thing about the guy from Stabbing Westward.

Awesome song and glad it is on here. I love to listen to it and love to sing it. Whoever this was about HAD to at least think, "Damn."

After I caught my first husband cheating I was playing this song when he walked in to find his stuff packed in the yard for him. I have long natural nails and he loved when I scratched his back and arms. It has been over ten years. I am now happily maried with 2 kids and he is still single,(no girls in our hometown want anything to do with him after the way he ran around on me.) So I hope he hears this song and remembers who caused his unhappiness.(himself!) I scratch my new husbands back and arms for him and I hope #1 feels it everytime.
