'Unhappy Birthday'
--The Smiths (1987)
If 'Happy Birthday to You' is considered the most popular song in the English language, then you'd think this fiendish rejoinder would rank reasonably high just from the blowback. Morrissey, who is worshipped in several languages for his unadulterated bitchiness, may have reached a venomous saturation point with this gleeful toodle-oo.

I thought this should have been number one. The other song that comes to mind is "Untouchable Face" by Ani DiFranco. I suppose you couldn't use too many curse words, though, eh?

Awesome tune! This came off of the Smiths best album ever. Also like Girlfriend In A Coma.

Black Sunshine, I was 18 years old in 1987, if the song was popular I would have heard of it! I used to write an article for my high school newspaper in the pop/rock music section. This was not a top ten song my senior year of high school.

Maybe your senior year you should have been listening to something besides WHAM or Madonna ...

@Jeff, I did listen to Madonna in 87. I never got into Wham. I think by that time George Michael had gone solo. I have to confess I still like Duran Duran's Notorious. I was somewhat into U2. Living in rural Illinois, I honestly didn't hear a lot of these songs. I listened to college radio (WVJC) I had heard of the Smith's. But none of my peers focused on this type of music. I was into Bon Jovi, Heart, Def Leppard, Genesis, Peter Gabriel. It was also very common to listen to the Beatles, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, and ZZ Top when I had friends over. If we did listen to the Smith's, I was too drunk or stoned to recall it.

Shouldn't Rihanna's "Take a Bow" be on here too? That song was quite mean.
