Meanest Love Songs: No. 8
'These Boots Are Made for Walkin''
--Nancy Sinatra (1966)
Writer-producer Lee Hazlewood insisted that a guy should sing it, but Nancy was adamant. At a writing session at the Sinatra family spread, Frank sat in another room while his daughter made her case. When Hazlewood left, Frank told Nancy she was right. The guy's lyin' when he oughta be truthin', same-in' when he oughta be changin' – you'd walk all over him, too.

I'd let her walk all over me! What a babe during that time in the mid '60's!

This song was my first deep true love's brush off song. We were in the car when the song came on, and she kept shushing me and telling me to listen to it. The song would have to be my number one in this catagory. (I shortly thereafter found the true love of my life, and we have been married for almost 40 years.)

wow. Neat Tom! Thanks for sharing!! I would love to hear her version of it. I bet it's a lot better than any of the others who have tried to sing that song!! You know it was in her heart the way she fought for it!!

I liked the song back then, but I didn't realize at the time that the divorce rate was on a all time high. Luckily my parents almost made their 50th Annv. But my dad passed two months after their 49th Annv. I grew up with Sinatra,Sammy Davis,Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. So I think Nancy did a great job on the song, that's why her dad agreed on her going threw her dreams! Isn't that why we have parents. To help us become better parents to our children?

I HAD THIS ALBUM WHEN I WAS ABOUT 10 - 12 YEARS OLD. THE SONG IS NOT MEAN. THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALIN. SHE WOULD HAVE ONLY WALKED ON A LYING/CHEATING MAN. THAT IS NOT MEAN. IT'S JUSTICE! LOL

When "Boots" came out,I was all of 5 yrs. old,and the song absolutely TERRIFIED me! I thought she was gonna walk up out of the tv amd stomp me! LOL. I think it also led to my utter fascination with women in high boots..the higher, the hotter! So,thanks Nancy..you're still my #1 fantasy boot babe!

I was in basic training at Ft. Dix when this song came out. At the time I had my own "boots" that I walked 20 miles to the rifle range. I can still visualize that album cover with Nancy in a reclining position wearing go-go boots, miniskirt, and that gorgeous striped sweater.

The title/chorus comes from a line that Dean Martin had in a western - so it was meant for a man, but she did it so well!
