On This Date in 2003: Billy Joel drives his new Mercedes-Benz into a tree on New York's Long Island. The singer-songwriter had been involved in an auto accident the previous June and will crash his car a third time -- into a house -- in April of the following year. The Almanac Advises for January 25: "Tree removal is often too difficult to take on yourself. If the tree is on public property, your municipality may remove it free of charge. If it lies on your own property, a landscaper may remove it inexpensively, or a logger may perform the job in exchange for the wood."
