On This Date in 1984: Due to a malfunctioning fireworks display, Michael Jackson's hair accidentally caught fire during the filming of a Pepsi commercial. The Almanac Advises for January 27: "The follicles of African and African-derived people's hair are actually more fragile than European hair, especially after it has been straightened, therefore the hair care needs are also different. Be careful to put as little heat as possible on your hair. Heat, especially combined with a perm, is particularly damaging.
