On This Date in 1979: Sixteen-year-old Brenda Spencer kills two people and injures nine in a shooting spree at a San Diego elementary school. Her stated reason for the rampage, "I don't like Mondays," inspired Irish New Wavers the Boomtown Rats to write a song about the incident with her phrase as the title.

The Almanac Advises for January 29: "Here are several tips for beating those Monday blues: 1. Put on a snazzy outfit to look your Monday best; 2. Start your Monday by gorging on your favorite snack food, such as chocolate; 3. Exercise -- nothing gets the feel-good hormones flowing better than an activity."
