Rock Almanac: February 1, 2008

On This Date in 1948: Rick James, known as the King of Punk Funk, was born as James Ambrose Johnson in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Almanac Advises for February 1: "Though the word 'freak' started out as a pejorative, it's now used in a more neutral fashion to describe someone with an unusual personality or passion, such as a 'neat freak' or a 'music freak.' So if someone calls you a freak, as the saying goes, let your freak flag fly! (The word is also used to denote a person of unusual sexual appetites.)"
