Best Band Logos: No. 14

Metallica

Drummer Lars Ulrich dubbed the band, but it was guitar god James Hetfield who designed both of the group's logos. The original version made its first appearance in the early '80s on Metallica's first business card. The design got a face lift (after the band members got haircuts) for 1996's 'Load.'

Metallica are toast. What a tragedy , I never thought I would've seen the day they woud've made a video with their shrink. Higher you get harder and faster you fall I suppose.

I'm a big fan of Mettalica but how can " they " refer to James Hetfield as a " guitar god" when early in the bands career he didn't even know how to play the guitar and was just a singer?

Metallica will always be the "Best metal band" ever!! So they have changed in recent years, and it is said if your a true metallica fan. I think they lost sight of what made them what they where. Kick ass riffs combined with kirks amazeing solos and lars chest punching double bass, is what Metallica was. Its just hard to beleive how they turned out, how do you go from a song like "Blackend" "puppets" to "sandman"? they where good songs on that album, but you could tell what was coming. It makes you wonder what "Cliff" would of said to "Bob Rock"?

Megadeth's latest "United Abominations" blasts anything Metallica did since their last "good" recording; the "black" album. In fact, challenge any Metallica album against any of Megadeth's year-by-year and the answer will be clear that Dave Mustaine is the king riff master!
Meg-a-deth! Meg-a-deth! RRRUUUUULLLLLEEEESSSS period.

Sory steel shark, Hetfield was originaly the the guitar player. And was not alway the singer in the begining.
Metallica started to go down hill after ....Justice.

"Guitar God" James Hetfield? You do understand that Hetfield was/is the band's rhythm guitar player, right? On the odd occasion he takes a lead spot, he barely rises to the level of a 16 year old who's been playing guitar for 2 years.

Even Kirk Hammett, the band's actual lead guitar player comes nowhere near being a guitar god. Hammett's style is just a bunch of cliched riffs strung together with no coherency or melodic content. Quite possibly the most over-rated guitar player (besides Keith Richards).

Anyone who considers Hetfield a guitar god has exactly zero credibility & shouldn't be taken seriously.

Well Steelshark....seeing that the band has been successful for over 25 years and in their beginning when Hetfield decided to only sing, which lasted for 5 gigs only, I don't see how one cannot learn to play an instrument. He has proven his abilities as both a guitarist and as a songwriter. That is, in fact, what you're insinuation is, right? That he didn't know how to play guitar (well) when he first started....right? He was the primary guitar riff & lyric writer up until the Load sessions. Kirk just wrote the solos. How can one claim to be a big fan of a band, but somehow discredit a member by referencing a point at which they were just trying to get started (which as I referenced already was over 25 years ago)? So I think your point is completely worthless.

How can you compare Megadeth to Metallica? Megadeth is still trying to stay stagnant in their music hoping to appeal to "metalheads" and "thrash junkies" everywhere. Whereas Metallica have ventured out and explored new kinds of tuning, and different genres of music. They were able to take their music and make it not only appeal to a younger generation of kids, but also people everywhere. Instead of a select group of people. And they did that knowing that they could lose "fans." So tell me, who is the better band? The band whose still trying to play the songs they wrote in the 80's, or the band whose pissed many people off by always trying to reinvent themselves and put out a different album? Hetfield and the boys are better songwriters than Mustaine and company will ever be. Mustaine could probably run circles around James' and Kirt's guitar playing when it comes to solos. But Metallica have better arrangements, lyrics, riffs, and overall better songs.
