On This Date in 1976: Eagles release 'Their Greatest Hits (1971-1976),' which subsequently becomes the best-selling album in U.S. history, with sales of more than 40 million copies worldwide .The Almanac Advises for February 17: "One of the great symbols of the United States, once in decline, has been flourishing in record numbers as of late. Thanks to the efforts of conservation-minded citizens, the American bald eagle, recently on the brink of extinction, has been resurrected. This goes to show that a formerly all-but-dead entity can be revived with the help of millions of Americans."
