Anyone who doubts Freddie's musical genius, needs to hunt down bootleg of Queen's 1979 gig at Hammersmith Odeon (McCartney's charity event "Concerts for the People of Kampuchea") - and witness a man ascending rock god status on nothing but his band and a bare stage (forget the explosives.)
Then for studio recording, check out the 70s albums - especially "Queen II" (1974) and experience Mozart in rock.
Mercury's genius is in the obscure stuff the music press blindly dismissed and ignored, not the radio-friendly hit songs that kept the entire band afloat.
Freddie spoke the truth. He beats any present day singer.

December 21 2008 at 4:15 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI dont know if he could be considered a legend, but a lot of his music has stood the test of time and some of it is a lot better than people gave them credit for. But a lot of these comments are really nasty and uncalled for. He DID die a sad death. Just because he slept with other guys doesnt mean he was a bad person. Jamie P., are you as stupid as you are ignorant?
November 28 2008 at 8:01 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHis statement was that "I won't be a rock star, I will be a legend," and as I and every Freddy Mercury/Queen fan see it he is both. He will forever be missed, but his music and talent will live on.
