when you see the entire text of this interview, lennon was saying that they are more known to more people in their day than jesus was in his day...that's all...but religious zealots in this country took it out of context and started actually burning beatles records...morons

At that point in time they were more popular. Kids would much rather see the Beatles than go to church. The Beatles changed everything; music, fashion, attitudes. You had to be there, I guess, it was an incredibly exciting time. This quote was really bad for them when it happened. Emotions were running so high, the backlash was fierce. I wish I had some of the records and memorabilia that was burned then. I could retire.

Jesus never had a number one record. He said they were more popular than Jesus not more important or better than Jesus. He later said if he had said Television was more popular than Jesus he would have gotten away with it.
