"I've outdone anyone you can name -- Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Strauss. Irving Berlin, he wrote 1,001 tunes. I wrote 5,500."

It's quality, not quantity, Mr.Brown

He's just saying he wrote more songs than they did. He didn't say his music was better. Just said he wrote more songs.

The James Brown phenomenon will live long after many of the so called "greats". He was black and he did something with nothing...along with feeding, clothing, and educating many poor under priviledged children. He will be sorely missed.

It's easy to write 5500 songs when each one is a minute long and contains 5 notes.

Referring to reader comment #1-- that goes for both music and women.

But JB was great at what he did.

LOL Did anyone really ever know what in the hell the lead singer of KISS was saying? James Brown forever! Live on playa, it was definetely "A Man's World".

Alas, poor Beethoven only managed nine symphonies. There's more music in two bars of the ninth than in Mr. Brown's entire ouvre

He was also the only one to be someone's prison bitch. Did that "feel good"? Ow!

JB sorry... you DON'T have that distinction. According to ASCAP and BMI, the record for most songs written and licensed belongs to the late Steve Allen at just over 100,000 songs.

JB interviewed a prospective guitarist. JB asked if said guitarist could play an E9 chord. The axe slinger replied "Of course!" JB then asked "For three hours?"

I seriously doubt that 100 years from now you'll see a symphony orchestra or a concert pianist will be performing "I Feel Good" or "It's A Man's World" to huge crowds. And I agree with Strat, quantity is not quality, besides, Beethoven wrote the most beautiful music after he was totally deaf, a feat that Mr. Brown couldn't accomplish with full hearing.
And it has nothing to do with race, there are a good many talented black composers & singer/songwriters such as the late Marvin Gaye who have written songs that will stand the test of time, unfortunately James Brown's name will never be on that list.
