Mercury came from the fact that he liked mythology and the name of Mercury the messenger god (Roman god).

i think mercury was from his startsign - mercury rules virgo his sign - also it was said that in "my fairy king" the song he wrote there was a line, "mother mercury look what they've done to me" and it inspired him to change his last name and he was refering to his own mom in the song.

Mercury was actually inspired by Elton John, whose middle name is Hercules. Freddie idolised Elton, and with Hercules being a mythological god, Freddie opted for a mythological god's name too - Mercury.

Actually, it's taken from a song, My Fiary King. Since the song contained the words "Mother Mercury", he decided to change his last name, too.
